Job fair for veterans offers chance to market work ethic
By LARRY P. VELLEQUETTE BLADE BUSINESS WRITER For 24-year-old Roland Forrester of Pemberville, returning to public service in another government job has a certain appeal. “I like the whole government experience,” said Mr. Forrester, who left the Marine Corps in September on a medical discharge after his Humvee flipped while he was on duty in Afghanistan. But like many veterans – and the rest of …

Question by Steven C: Can you still draw unemployment from a private job if you are turning in taxes?
My Mom just took a private job as a caregiver for some elderly folks. She will be turning in her own taxes. If she were to get fired would she be able to draw unemployment?

Best answer:

Answer by v b
She can’t have it both ways.

If she’s going the self-employment route, she can’t file for unemployment.

If she wants to be an employee, she needs to read through IRS pub 926, decide if she’s an employee (chances are, she is) and have the employer do this properly, including paying SUTA/FUTA taxes when they file their tax return.

    This is just a side show to keep people who nothing of economics happy and to convince you that Obama is on your side. Very little any president has done over the past 30 years has had much of a direct effect on employment. These policies exist, so he won’t have to explain to you why the people who run the US economy at the Federal Reserve and work in Obama’s administration are the exact same people that ran the economy during the Bush administration.

    @LambyChick

    Are you certain God is on Obama’s side? Did God tell you that Himself? Did he send an angel?

    Maybe Obama is just a human being, capable of errors and influence, just as you or I are. Maybe some Democrats do have good reason to oppose his policies. Would God really approve of Obama’s policy of assassinating US citizens without trial. I thought the Declaration of Independence guaranteed us inalienable rights endowed by our Creator. Do not all Americans have a right to trial by jury?

  • LambyChick says:

    bcuz he is doin the right thing he is trying his best and republicans and even some democrats are trying sooooo hard to hold him down but God is on his side!!

  • commandersprocket says:

    to me this is a good idea. I approve, we need to move toward full employment. We need innovation regarding the cost of education (computer mediated?apprenticing?).
    However I don’t believe that economic incentives work well for most businesses (it works good enough to be worthwhile) what we need to do is teach innovation in high school and college, so everyone can start a business.

  • ReliableInsider says:

    If the GOP were a republican party or a conservative party, they would be in favor of new jobs created by the private sector.

    Are they? No.

    They’re not a political party anymore. They’re just a five-year-old holding their dad’s ankle as he drags them through the mall.

    @LambyChick

    What makes you think God supports
    Obama?

  • bobjman says:

    @politicalfarce

    You didn’t know that because you’re
    not an economist. Even though, they’ve
    long been obsolete, both parties maintain
    the illusion that their policies actually can
    generate GDP growth so the US People
    believe their still relevant and don’t pay
    any attention to the most powerful central
    bank in the history of civilization. Most
    members on Congress don’t even
    understand economic policy to realize
    they’re not longer relevant. It helps
    maintain the charade.

  • bobjman says:

    @politicalfarce

    Honestly you waaaay off the mark. As an
    economist, let me tell you something. The
    “stimulus” is just a dog and pony show.
    For the past 25 years the only meaningful
    economic policy has come from the
    Federal Reserve. Congress and the President
    don’t actually do any meaningful
    economic policy. The 15 Billion jobs bill is
    a joke, like the earlier “stimuli” The entire
    reason we have GDP grow is because the
    Fed cut interest rates to 0 and bought
    trillions of toxic assets.

  • bobjman says:

    @leggink

    Uh, huh. So we get some table scraps
    while all the big businesses with lobbyists
    get tax breaks or even outright bailouts.
    How’s this any different from the Bush
    admin again?

  • bobjman says:

    @cherDJ

    Where’s your businesses lobbyist? Oh
    wait, you don’t have one? Well that means
    you need to get in line behind all the big
    businesses with armies of lobbyists. You
    can get some of the scraps that are left
    after they have all gotten theirs, if there
    are any scraps left.

    And the private sector isn’t doing its job in the first place,so it needs to be punished.

  • MrTabby5000 says:

    well look whats happens when we didnt.10% unemployment might not seem much to you,unless you do become unemployed.Yes obama is no magician or messiah,he has to tend with the congress and them blue dogs.

  • bobjman says:

    He didn’t really campaign against the Patriot Act, he just b1tched about it and figured all his supporters would just assume he was against it. He never promised to repeal the whole think; he wanted you to think he did though. That’s how “Hope and Change” work; they represent whatever you want them to mean without actually meaning anything. I have to say it was a pretty good strategy; it looks like it worked.

  • bobjman says:

    “Tax breaks to companies who hire new workers” is code for tax breaks to the lobbied big business interests. Tax breaks to defense contractors and oil companies fall under that euphemism.

  • bobjman says:

    We were also the only major industrial nation not devastated by WWII. We were the only industrial game in town. Our economy is a shell of its former strength; we can’t get away with what we did in the 50′s and 60′s today.

    nope he isn’t already the best US President in history. He hasn’t beat Washington, Lincoln, FDR, JFK, or Clinton, and your prejudging he still has 3-7 years left.

  • Robert E. Lee says:

    No, because she is a private contractor and doesn’t contribute to the unemployment fund.

  • StephenWeinstein says:

    Generally, no. First, to collect unemployment, a person must first work as an employee. This job sounds like work as an independent contractor, not an employee. Second, the word “fired” means terminated for misconduct, which usually leaves a person ineligible for unemployment benefits. In most cases, unemployment benefits are only available to workers who lose their jobs because their employers do not have enough money to pay them or do not have enough work for them to do.

  • Judy says:

    If she is an employee, the people she works for should be withholding taxes, paying into unemployment for her, paying matching ss and medicare amounts, and giving her a W-2 at the end of the year. She would be eligible for unemployment.

    If she is working as a contractor, getting a 1099 or no paperwork at all, she isn’t eligible.
